This chapter discusses the agro-ecological zones (AEZ) and main soil types in Africa followed by a section on the extent, effects and costs of land degradation including issues of soil productivity and profi tability associated with fertilizer use in Africa. There are a variety of soil types in the fi ve major agro-ecological zones of Africa. Ferralsols and the Acrisol are dominant in the humid zones. Ferralsols are dominant in the sub-humid zone and so are Lixisols while in the semi-arid zone Lixisols have

Factors Affecting Phosphorus Nutrition and Fertilizer Use by Sugarcane in South Africa
In the South African sugar industry during the past sixty years considerable research has taken place in the field, laboratory and glasshouse with regard to the phosphorus requirement of sugarcane. Reference is made to the amounts ofP used by sugarcane and to the economics of fertilization. The value of phosphatic fertilizer for cane production is reviewed using available field experimental dat...
متن کاملComparison of Al P and Olsen P Test in Calcareous Soils in Croatia
The common use of soil-fertility control data in Croatia includes properties such as soil pH, organic matter content and plant-available phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) extracted by ammonium lactate (AL) solution. These data are commonly used for fertilizer recommendations for both field vegetable (Lončarić et al., 2003) and arable crops (Vukadinović et al., 1996). Also, the same soil data hav...
متن کاملFertility Trends in the South African Sugar Industry
Since the nutrient survey of the South African sugar industry in 1970 little use has been made of analytical data for determining trends in soil fertility and plant nutnent uptake in the regional extension areas of the industry. This became possible in 1980 following computerisation of fertilizer recommendations by the Fertilizer Advisory Service (FAS)of the Experiment Station. Since then a dat...
متن کاملComparison of Soil Nitrogen Tests for Corn Fertilizer Recommendations in the Humid Southeastern USA
C urrently recommended N management in North Carolina and elsewhere in the humid southeastern USA is based on realistic yield expectations (RYE). In North Carolina, N recommendations based on RYE are made from a database of RYE by soil map unit or based on a grower's documented historic yields (the average of the best three yields during a 5-yr period; North Carolina Nutrient Management Workgro...
متن کاملPhosphorus and Potassium Placement Methods for Corn and Soybean: an Iowa Perspective
Increasing fertilizer prices and awareness of potential impacts of excessive or badly applied nutrients on water quality has renewed interest in fertilizer management strategies that reduce nutrient inputs or improve efficacy. Fertilizer recommendations for phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in Iowa and most states of the Corn Belt are based on soil testing and maintenance of desirable soil-test ...
